British No.1 Andy Murray has won the AEGON Player of the Month award for January. The world No.5 equalled his best ever Grand Slam performance by reaching the final of the 2011 Australian Open.
It was the 23 year old's third Grand Slam final and second in Melbourne.
In the 2011 tournament Murray failed to drop a set before the semi-finals. Along the way he defeated Karol Beck, Illya Marchenko and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first three rounds with comfortable straight sets wins.
In the fourth round the British no.1 was at his best as he demolished Jurgen Melzer and had little troubles against Alexandr Dolgopolov in the quarter-finals after the Ukrainian had upset Robin Soderling.
In the semi-finals the Scot defeated David Ferrer after coming from set and set point down to set up a final with Novak Djokovic.
Unfortunately for the Briton, on the day of the final, the Serb was too much for Murray to handle and won in straight sets.
Despite the defeat in the final, finishing with the runners up spot meant it was still a successful tournament for the British No.1
LTA Chief Executive Roger Draper commented afterwards, "Andy had a fantastic tournament and whilst it is a great shame on this occasion he couldn't go all the way, he is firmly up there with the best in the world."
