History
The Australian Open is managed by Tennis Australia, formerly the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, and will be celebrating its 105 th year in 2010.
The first tournament, named the Australasian Championships, was held in 1905 at Warehouseman's Cricket Ground in St Kilda Road, Melbourne. It had 17 entrants and the final was played in front of a crowd of 5,000.
Having toured around Australia for many years, the tournament permantently settled in Melbourne in 1972, finding its home at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. However, the enormous crowd demand prompted a move to the purpose-built Flinders Park, now known as Melbourne Park, in 1988.
In 2010 the event attracted a record crowd of 653,860 people, eclipsing the previous record set in 2008 by 50,000 fans. The tournament twice posted the world’s highest-ever Grand Slam combined day/night attendance (on the first Wednesday and middle Saturday) with Saturday, 23 January attended by 77,043 fans, 11,000 more than the previous record.
