High Performance Centres (HPCs) are carefully designed to meet the needs of developing tennis players. They run as independent units offering high-level coaching and fitness regimes. This network is crucial to the winning vision outlined in the Blueprint for British Tennis.
The LTA currently supports a network of 19 High Performance Centres which provide a base for junior performance players. This means up-and-coming players across the country have access to top facilities and coaching.
Currently we are recruiting for a new player intake on the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE).
After a successful first year of piloting the scheme across 13 high performance centres and with 67 players enrolled we now have a further 5 high performance centres running the scheme from September 2007.
If you are aged 16 to 18, are currently in secondary education, have a passion for tennis and wish to fulfil your potential in this sport then the AASE Scheme could be for you. You should have an LTA Rating of 6.1 or better and be completing GCSEs in June 2007 with the intention to continue further education with AS/A2 Level, AVCE or BTEC National Diploma. HPC Players
The players at High Performance Centres are mainly aged between 10 and 16 years old. However, HPCs also provide a good environment for other sparring players, which can positively influence the training programme. The LTA has a system of categorising its top juniors against international standards (click here to view the criteria for player funding). Each HPC is working to get as many of its players as possible up to the top level.
To qualify as an HPC, a centre has to fulfill certain criteria. It must make sure players have access to indoor courts at required times, plus a gym and player room. The LTA also looks for other on-site facilities, including accommodation and on-site tuition for youngsters. Players must be allocated committed court time and have individually managed programmes.
LTA Support for HPCs
In March 2007 the LTA announced enhanced support for HPCs, including substantially increased funding for many centres’ performance programmes and players. This is based on the programmes offered as well as the number of performance players supported.
The support package provides the clubs with access to enhanced technical, sports science, specialist men’s and women’s and facilities advice, as well as full access to the National Tennis Centre. It also provides substantially increased funding support for the centres between 2007 and 2009. This is designed to help reduce the costs currently met by performance players and their parents to an absolute minimum, especially for the top-rated players in each age group. This will reduce an identified barrier to success.

In the longer term, the LTA also plans to designate a number of centres as International High Performance Centres (IHPCs). Decisions on IHPC status will now be made in Spring 2008.
HPCs and Satellite Clubs
Each High Performance Centre also acts as a hub, supporting a network of satellite (or county) clubs in its surrounding area. These satellite clubs focus primarily on talent development for up and coming performance players under the age of twelve.
