The AEGON Winter County Cup took place over the weekend, with Hertfordshire and Yorkshire achieving notable success by winning the men's and women's titles respectively.
The event, which combined both singles and doubles, is played in competitions across the country including Bath, Sheffield and Nottingham and provided the ideal opportunity for both senior and junior players to represent their county in a competitive team environment.
In each competition, six players made up a team with the winners of Group 1 being crowned champions and promotion and relegation for the following year being contested in all the other Groups.
This season in Group 1, which was held in Bath, Hertfordshire reclaimed the men’s title after winning all three of their matches against Cheshire, South Wales and Surrey.
After winning six of their nine rubbers to claim victory over Cheshire in their opening tie, the team consisting of Neil Bamford, Ed Corrie, George Coupland, Dominic Ross-Hurst, Neil Roskilly, David Thompson and Tom Corrie went on to defeat South Wales 7-2 and then Surrey 4-2 to secure the trophy for the third consecutive year.
The victory follows on from the side's Summer County Cup success in July as they claimed the County cup double in 2009.
Ed Corrie, Thompson and Coupland won all of their singles rubbers over the weekend to help the Hertfordshire on their way to being crowned men’s Winter County champions.
Meanwhile in the Group 1 women’s event, Yorkshire secured a crucial 5-2 final match victory over Warwickshire
The Yorkshire side, which was made up Jo Craven, Nicola Mooney, Linsey Jacks, Nicole Peterson, Sarah Gregg, Karen Mitchell, Kim Atkinson and Georgia Craven, won their previous two matches against Middlesex and 2008 champions Lancashire on their way to winning the title.
On the women’s tour Naomi Broady won the $25k women's singles event in Puebla (MEX) after defeating Ajla Tomljanovic (CRO) 7-6(4), 6-3 in the final.
Jamie Baker reached the semi-finals of the men's $35k event in Puebla (MEX) with his partner Nima Rochan (AUS) before losing 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 to the Spanish pairing of Guillermo Olaso and Pere Riba, who defeated Jamie Delgado and John Paul Fruttero (USA) in the previous round.
Amanda Carreras won 6-4, 3-6, [11-9] in the doubles at the $10k event in Vallduxo with Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino (ESP) against the Spanish duo Yera Cambos-Molina and Sandra Soler-Sola.
The Briton also finished runner-up in the singles event in Spain, reaching the final after being handed a walkover against No.1 seed Sandra Soler-Sola.
Carreras went on to face No.2 seed Laura Thorpe (FRA) in the final, a player ranked 83 places above her in the rankings. The Briton was defeated 2-6, 2-6 as she improved on her recent quarter-final finish at the $10k event in Antalya-Belek (TUR).
Meanwhile on the junior tour, Elliesha Ball finished as runner-up in the girls’ doubles Grade 5 ITF East African tour in Rwanda after teaming up with Yasmin Ebada (EGY).
It was an excellent tournament for Ball and Ebada despite losing 3-6, 4-6 to No.1 seeds Niriantsa Rasolomalala and Zarah Razafimahatratra from Madagascar in the final as they defeated No.2 seeds Natasha Fourouclas and Tracy Plant from South Africa in the semi-finals.
