Golding and Carpenter win in the States

British Junior No.1 Oliver Golding has defeated No.10 seed Junior Ore (USA) to reach the third round of the Eddie Herr International in Bradenton, USA.

The Briton, who was recently named on an initial shortlist of ten athletes in contention for the 2009 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award, defeated his opponent 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to set up a third round tie with wildcard entrant Gonzales Austin (USA).

Golding will be aiming to cap a successful year in which he became the youngest ever British Junior No.1, after climbing a remarkable 1167 places in the Junior rankings since the turn of the year, as well as representing Great Britain in the final of the Junior Davis Cup in Mexico.

And Golding has also made progress in the doubles event alongside partner Ashley Hewitt. The pair won 6-3, 6-2 against the Russian duo of Mikhail Biryukov and Alexander Rumyantsev and now play No.6 seeds Damir Dzumhur (BIH) and Mikelis Libietis (LAT).

Jack Carpenter joins Golding in the third round of the singles in Bradenton after successfully negotiating his way past tournament No.1 seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

The British Junior No.3 defeated the ITF Junior No.10 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 and has been rewarded with a match against home favourite and wildcard entrant Nick Chappell (USA).

Elsewhere in the boys’ singles draw, James Marsalek went down 3-6, 1-6 to No.3 seed Marton Fucsovics, who is ranked 108 places higher than the Briton in the rankings.

In the girls’ event in America, Heather Watson has reached the third round after a 6-4, 6-1 win over Monica Turewicz in the second round. The Junior US Open champion will now face the No.13 seed Polina Leykina (RUS).

Meanwhile on the senior tour, Jocelyn Rae has reached  the final of the $25k doubles event in Bendigo with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Ellen Barry (NZL) and Marija Mirkovic (AUS). Rae and her partner, Emelyn Starr (AUS), now meet No.1 seeds Irena Pavlovic (FRA) and Arina Rodionova (RUS).

Naomi Broady has reached the quarter-finals of the $10k event in La Habana (CUB) after a 6-1, 6-2 win over Margarita-Greta Skripnik (ISR) and now plays Lisa Summerer (AUT), whilst Natasha Khan is through to the semi-finals of the doubles with Gally De Wael (BEL).

The pair won 6-1, 6-1 against Vaszilisza Bulgakova (HUN) and Aleksandra Razumova (RUS) and now play Mariana Correa (ECU) and Angelina Gabueva (RUS).

On the men’s tour, No.1 seeds James Feaver and Juan-Pablo Amado (ARG) are into semi-finals of the $10k ITF event in Arequipa, Peru, after a  6-4, 6-4 victory over the Peruvian pair of Juan-Pedro Torres and Juan Jose Torres Zea. They now meet No.3 seeds Paris Gemouchidis (GRE) and Alexandros Jakupovic from Greece.

At the $10k event in Santo Domingo, Alexander Slabinsky has put the disappointment of defeat to Adam El Mihdawy (USA) in the singles behind him by reaching the semi-finals of the doubles with partner Amir Weintraub (ISR).

The No.3 seeds scored a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory Younes Ben- Abderrahman (BEL) and Damon Gooch (RSA) to set up a clash with the No.1 seeds David Canudas-Fernandez and Ignacio Coll-Riudavets from Spain.
