Murray plays Del Potro in Tour Finals opener

Friday, November 20, 2009

Andy Murray will play US Open Champion Juan Martin del Potro in the opening match of the singles event at the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena on Sunday.

The British No.1 competes in Group A of the tournament alongside Roger Federer, Del Potro and Fernando Verdasco, as he attempts to progress through the round robin group stages of the event for the second successive year.

"In my group Federer is the best in the world, Del Potro has won the US Open and Verdasco has just had his best season to date - there are no easy matches regardless of what group you're in" said Murray.

Elsewhere, Federer meets Verdasco in the second Group A match on Sunday evening, whilst reigning champions Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic start the defence of their title on Sunday afternoon (1230 hrs) against the Polish pairing of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

The other doubles tie taking place on Sunday sees Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles up against Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak in the evening session (1900 hrs) at the O2 Arena.

Group B commences on Monday with the reigning singles champion Novak Djokovic starting the defence of his title against Nikolay Davydenko in a repeat of last year’s final.

World No.2 Rafael Nadal plays Robin Soderling on Monday afternoon with Bob and Mike Bryan taking on Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram in the first match of the day (1230 hrs).

The evening session on Monday includes Djokovic’s clash with Davydenko and Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes against Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach in the doubles.
