Murray marches on

Saturday, November 07, 2009

Andy Murray has reached the final of the ATP Open in Valencia after defeating tournament No.4 seed Fernando Verdasco (ESP) in the semi-finals in Spain.

The World No.4 started the match in typically determined fashion, saving three break points and taking the first set 6-3, just as he did in their last meeting in the ATP Masters in Miami earlier this year.

However, unlike their meeting in Miami, Verdasco managed to battle his way back into the contest by taking the second set, 6-2.

This required an immediate response from the Briton, and he steadied himself in the third set by holding his serve in the opening game. The pair then exchanged service games with the Spaniard saving two break points in the fourth game of the set.

Murray eventually exerted his authority in the sixth game of the third set, breaking his opponent to gain a 4-2 lead, before serving out the match in the ninth game to complete a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win in a little over two hours.

Murray will now meet Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) in the final after he defeated fellow Russian and tournament No.2 seed Nicolay Davydenko 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the other semi-final.

The British No.1 will be hoping to complete the perfect comeback from a six week break with a wrist injury, by claiming his sixth title of 2009 in Spain.

Jennifer and Jessica Ren have teamed up to win the doubles event at the $10k AEGON Pro-Series event in Sunderland.

The duo battled back from a set down to defeat the Dutch pair Danielle Harmsen and Joanne Van Bennekom 3-6, 6-4, (10-8) to claim victory in a week in which they reached the final without dropping a set.

Jennifer Ren also impressed in the singles draw in Sunderland, reaching the semi-finals before narrowly losing 4-6, 3-6 to the No.5 seed Matea Mezak.

In the other singles semi-final, Jade Curtis lost 3-6, 4-6 to Timea Babos (HUN), who is hoping for more success after already tasting victory this year in a British event when she claimed the $10k event in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile on the Veterans’ tour, the Great Britain Women’s 65 team of Jacky Boothman, June Fisher, Jenny Waggott and Sue Hill won the Kitty Godfree Cup in Perth, Australia. The quartet, who were seeded No.2 in the event, came through a tough group as winners and went on to defeat France 2-1 in the semi-finals. In the final against Australia, Waggott and Hill won their singles matches to help them claim the title.

Elsewhere in Australia, the Women’s 60 and 70 teams claimed fourth position in the Alice Marble and Athea Gibson Cups respectively whilst the Men’s 60, 65, 70 and 80 teams finished in fifth position.
