Murray cruises into Valencia semis

Friday, November 06, 2009

Andy Murray has breezed into the semi-finals of the ATP Open in Valencia with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Albert Montanes (ESP).

Murray, who reached the quarter-finals with a battling performance against Leonardo Mayer (ARG) last night, continued his comeback from a wrist injury in fine style by breaking his opponent in the very first game.

Despite conceding his serve in the sixth game of the opening set, the British No.1 fought back to break the Spaniard again in the ninth game with an exquisite drop shot from the baseline before closing out the set in straight forward fashion.

The second set began much the same as the first with Murray breaking his opponent in an opening game that saw him produce two splendid forehand winners. The Briton’s apparent domination of the contest continued as he gained a 4-0 lead before Montanes held serve to avoid a second set bagel.

The World No.4’s semi-final place was eventually secured as he saved break point to serve out the match and set up a clash with Fernando Verdasco (ESP) or Tommy Robredo (ESP), who play in their quarter-final tonight.

Elsewhere on the men’s tour Jamie Murray and Jonathan Marray have won the $125k ATP Challenger event in Astana (KAZ) after a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory over the tournament No.1 seeds David Martin (USA) and Rogier Wassen (NED).

The tournament No.2 seeds did not drop a set en-route to the final and follows the title win that the pair achieved in September at the €42,500 Alphen Challenger in Alphen Aan Den Rijn, Netherlands.
