Friday, November 06, 2009

The AEGON Pro-Series in Sunderland draws to a close over the weekend with two British players hoping for success at the $10k event at the Sunderland Tennis Centre.

Jade Curtis and Jennifer Ren have both reached the semi-finals of the singles event after tournament No.1 seed Curtis eased past Karolina Nowak (GER) 6-4, 6-4 to set up a semi-finals clash with Timea Babos (HUN).

Babos, who reached the final in her last tournament appearance in Great Britain at the $10k event in Felixstowe, won 6-1, 7-6(3) against Piia Suomalainen.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals draw, the all-British quarter-final clash between Ren and Samantha Vickers saw Ren claim a 6-2, 6-0 win. She will now play No.5 seed Matea Mezak (CRO), who won 6-3, 6-2 against No.2 seed Danielle Harmsen (NED).

Meanwhile there has been success on the junior circuit for a number of British players including a win for Danieka Borthwick and Elisha Gabb in the final of the Grade 4 Girl’s doubles event in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

The duo defeated the Japanese pair of Misano Sato and Maria Maehara, 6-2, 6-3 to merit their No.1 seeding for the event and complete a week in which they did not drop a set en route to the title.

Amy Askew is through to the final of the singles draw in Nonthaburi where she will meet the No.2 seed Saska Gavrilovska (SRB). Askew reached the final with a hard fought 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory against the No.7 seed Tanaporn Thongsing (THA).

There have also been impressive performances by the boys on the junior circuit with Christopher Simpson through to the final of the Grade 4 Boys’ Indoor Junior Championships in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Belgium, after beating Marc Hermann (GER), 6-1, 6-1. The Briton, seeded No.4 in this event, now plays No.1 seed Jannick Lupescu (NED) in the final.

Stefan Sterland- Markovic has reached the quarter-finals of the Grade 5 Boys’ Junior Championships in Saint Cyprien (FRA) where he will face No.5 seed Laurent Lokoli (FRA). Sterland-Markovic, who is seeded No.1 in both singles and doubles events, teams up with Alexandre Massa (FRA) in the semi-finals of the doubles against the French pairing of Armel Rancezot and Jonathan Kanar.
