Curtis leads the way in Sunderland

Nine British players are through to the second round of the $10k AEGON Pro-Series singles event in Sunderland.

Tournament No.1 seed and British No.8 Jade Curtis led the way with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of qualifier and fellow Briton Michelle Farley.

Curtis will meet Elizabeth Thomas in the second round after she also gained success over a British qualifier in Claire Birnie, 6-1, 6-3, whilst Helen Parish defeated Anett Schutting (EST), 6-1, 6-0.

Alexandra Walker won the battle of the wild card entries as she defeated Ruth Seaborne 6-3, 6-1 and will now meet No.8 seed Karolina Nowak (GER), who eased past Michaela Ince (GBR) 6-4, 6-3.

Joining them in the second round are Samantha Vickers, Nicola George and qualifier Jennifer Ren. Whilst Ren defeated Vaideanu (ITA) 6-3, 6-2 and George won 6-2, 6-2 against Joanna Henderson (GBR), Vickers impressed by knocking out No.4 seed Svenja Weidemann, 6-3, 6-3. 

Jade Windley and Lisa Whybourn make up the nine British players left in the competition after Windley, the No.6 seed, overcame Natasha Khan (GBR) 6-0, 6-4 whilst Whybourn, who is seeded No.7, won 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 against Malou Ejdesgaard (DEN) in one of only two first round ties that required three sets.

Meanwhile in the doubles event, eight British players are competing in the second round of the draw.

Curtis and Khan will team up to face Ren and Jessica Ren after they won 6-3, 6-3 against Britons Aimee Gibson and Helen Parish whilst Ren and Ren were also involved in an all-British clash, winning 6-2, 6-2 against Vickers and Hannah Hume.

After receiving a bye in the first round, both pairings of Windley and Jocelyn Rae and Thomas and Kelly Anderson (RSA) are also in action. Windley and Rae face the British pairing of Farley and Sabrina Bamburac whilst Thomas and Anderson are up against Lara Michel (SUI) and Jana Jandova (CZE).
