British men compete in Cardiff

Monday, October 26, 2009

The $15k AEGON Pro-Series event takes place this week in Cardiff with eighteen British players competing in the first round of the men’s singles.

The event, which also sees twenty players in the doubles event, is the penultimate men’s AEGON Pro-Series event of a busy 2009.

In the singles draw, tournament No.1 seed and British No.4 Josh Goodall received a wild card entry into the competition and will meet qualifier Maniel Bains in the opening round. With 627 places separating the pair in the rankings, Goodall will be hoping to replicate his recent AEGON Pro-Series title win in Nottingham last month by progressing into the second round.

Elsewhere in the draw No.2 seed Yannick Mertens (BEL) competes, fresh from his victory over Dan Evans at the $15k event in Glasgow last week.

If Mertens reaches the second round, he could face Dominic Inglot, providing he can overcome qualifier James Marsalek in his first round tie. For Inglot, the potential meeting could provide the ideal opportunity for revenge over Mertens, after he lost in the second round in Glasgow last week.

Meanwhile Alexander Slabinsky has been handed a tough first round tie against No.3 seed Uladzimir Ignatik (BLR) whilst the runner-up in Glasgow, Evans, will meet Chris Eaton.

Eaton also teams up with Inglot in the doubles draw as the No.1 seeds will be aiming to reach their second Pro-Series final in a row, after winning in Glasgow on Saturday.

The tournament in Cardiff takes place at the Cardiff Health & Rackets Club, with the finals taking place on Saturday 31st October.
