London 2012 launches Olympic Pictograms

Friday, October 23, 2009

The London 2012 Olympic Pictograms have been revealed by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

The 38 pictograms are a visual representation of each Olympic sport and discipline at the Games and will serve to engage the British public with every individual sport.

The symbols were first introduced at the last London Olympic Games in 1948 and have regularly featured since the 1964 Games in Tokyo.

"The pictograms will be a vital wayfinder for spectators and will become recognisable come 2012, but by unveiling them now we have a fantastic opportunity to use them as a tool for people to find out more about the Olympic sports,” said the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games chairman, Lord Coe.

“Over the next three years, each sport has a golden opportunity to tell its story and educate the British public about what it is on offer at London 2012 and we will work with all of the governing bodies to ensure that knowledge of all the Olympic sports increases between now and 2012."

There are two versions of each pictogram, a traditional silhouette and a version to be used on merchandising, posters and other marketing materials. It has been described by the IOC Coordination Commission Chairman Denis Oswald as a symbol that “draws its inspiration from the London underground map, forever linking these Games to this great city.”

The countdown to the start of the Games continues with 1008 days until the commencement of the Olympic Games on 27th July 2012 and 1041 days until the Paralympic Games get underway on 29th August 2012.
