Great Britain’s tennis team secured silver and bronze medals over the weekend at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.
Max Jones and Dominic Inglot teamed up to win silver in the men’s doubles, coming through five matches before eventually losing to Chinese Taipei’s Lee and Yi 6-4 7-6 in the final.
Jones, who attends New Mexico University, has consistently been ranked inside the top 10 players in NCAA Division 1 this year.
Inglot, who attends the University of Virginia, recently won the NCAA National Championship and is currently No.26 in the university rankings.
“It is great to win silver at the World University Games and it has been a great experience,” said Jones. “The opposition in the finals were very tough and the humidity of the day made it hard, but I cannot be disappointed with a silver medal.”
Just two hours after winning the silver medal, Inglot paired up with Sam Murray, who also represented Team GB at the Bangkok Games in 2007, to clinch the mixed doubles bronze after losing to Korea’s Kim and Kim 4-6 6-3 [3-10] in the semi-final.
“I am a little disappointed to lose in both matches but to get silver and bronze medals after defeating some tough opponents en route is very satisfying,” said Inglot, who along with gymnast Beth Tweddle were the only British athletes to win two medals.
“[Max] Jones and [Sam] Murray played excellent and I couldn’t have done it without them, I am thrilled for the whole tennis team. I would like to thank the whole Team GB for their support at these Games," added Inglot.
