All-British finals set for Frinton

Friday, July 17, 2009

There will definitely be two British singles champions at AEGON Pro-Series Frinton, a men’s $15k and women’s $10k event, after four Brits booked their place in the finals on Friday.

David Rice will meet Josh Milton in the men’s final and Anna Fitzpatrick will face Heather Watson in the women’s final, both on Saturday.

Rice reached the final with an impressive straight sets victory over the top seed, Australian Greg Jones, 6-4 6-4 while Milton, the No.6 seed from Wales, also eased through his semi-final match, defeating qualifier Kyle Brassington 6-2 6-2.

Fitzpatrick and Watson, who came through qualifying to seal a spot in the main draw, both upset the form book by knocking out higher ranked opposition, Fitzpatrick beating No.5 seed Jocelyn Rae 6-4 6-4 and Watson beating No.2 seed Anna Smith 6-2 6-1.

The doubles events concluded on Friday with Irish duo Tristan Farron-Mahon and Colin O’Brien winning the men’s title and Rae and Jade Windley winning the women’s title.

Rae and Windley, who defeated Fitzpatrick and Australian Emelyn Starr 6-3 7-5 to lift the trophy, also claimed victory in Felixstowe last week, the pair’s first two titles together.

Alex Bogdanovic is through to the quarter final at AEGON Pro-Series Manchester, a men’s €30k Challenger. The British No.4 came through a hard fought second round match against Austria’s Alexander Peya 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2.

The last time he faced Peya was in the deciding rubber in last September’s Davis Cup tie between Great Britain and Austria at Wimbledon. On that occasion, Peya won in four sets to clinch a 3-2 victory for his country and promotion into the World Group.

In the last eight, Bogdanovic will meet Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan, the No.6 seed who knocked out Dan Evans in the second round on Thursday.
