Stoop reaches quarters in Spain

Friday, July 10, 2009

British No.5 Georgie Stoop is through to the quarter final at the $25k event in La Coruna, Spain.

Stoop booked her place in the last eight with a routine second round victory over Argentina’s Florencia Molinero 6-4 6-1.

The 21 year-old will now face Russian No.7 seed Alexandra Panova as she attempts to reach her second semi-final of the year.

Stoop, the No.4 seed, is coached by Damien Roberts at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton and is currently ranked No.187 in the world – nine places from her career high which she achieved in May.

At Wimbledon, the right-hander from Cambridge narrowly lost to world No.7 Vera Zvonareva in her opening match but teamed up with Laura Robson to reach the second round of the doubles.

Also in Spain this week, Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski are set to meet Belgian Ruben Bemelmans and Italian Riccardo Ghedin in the doubles semi-final at the €85k Pozoblanco Challenger.

Seeded No.3, Fleming and Skupski, who knocked Bob and Mike Bryan out of last month’s AEGON Championships at Queen’s Club, are vying to win their eighth title together.

Broady to face Rae in Felixstowe

Friday will see an intriguing all-British quarter final clash between Naomi Broady and Jocelyn Rae at AEGON Pro-Series Felixstowe, a men’s $15k and women’s $10k event.

Top seeded Broady has had an impressive start to the year including winning her first senior title at a $10k event in France while Rae’s best performance at this level came last year in Frinton where she reached the semi-final.

Elsewhere in the draw, No.2 seed Anna Smith will play Australian Tammi Patterson, British junior No.1 Heather Watson will play Italian Raffaella Bindi and Anna Fitzpatrick will play Hungarian Timea Babos.

In the men’s draw, a bad day for the Brits on Thursday saw David Rice, Alex Ward, Liam Broady, Ashley Hewitt, Marcus Willis, James Chaudry and Josh Milton all bow out in the second round.
