Serena Williams defeated her elder sister on Saturday afternoon to win her third Wimbledon singles title.
Serena, many people’s under dog going in to the final, defeated Venus 7-6(3) 6-2 on a sunny, roofless Centre Court.
After no breaks of serve in the opening 12 games, Serena played a fantastic tie-break to clinch the first set, winning with a majestic topspin lob over her stranded sibling.
The world No.2 continued the momentum into the second set and broke serve twice, once at 3-2 and again at 5-2 when she sealed victory with her fourth championship point.
In Thursday’s semi-final, Serena saved a match point against Russian No.4 seed Elena Dementieva, eventually coming through the hard fought battle 6-7(4) 7-5 9-7 in nearly three hours.
Serena now has 11 Grand Slam titles to her name including three at The Championships, beating Venus in the final on each occasion. Meanwhile, Venus was chasing her sixth Wimbledon title after winning her fifth in 2008 by edging past Serena in the final.
Venus and Serena will return to Centre Court later in the day for the women’s doubles final. Attempting to win their fourth title together at The All England Club, the two sisters will face Australian No.3 seeds Sam Stosur and Rennae Stubbs.
The men’s doubles final, which is also taking place on Saturday afternoon, see the top two seeds face off, American twins Bob and Mike Bryan against Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic.
