Laura Robson’s bid to retain her girls’ singles title at Wimbledon gathered momentum on Tuesday evening in front of a packed Court 4 crowd.
Robson, the No.2 seed, dominated from the back of the court to defeat Australian qualifier Sally Peers 6-3 6-2 in 63 minutes.
The 15 year-old broke serve at 4-3 in the first set and always looked in control from then on, breaking serve twice more in the second set to clinch victory.
Robson, who made her senior debut at The Championships last week against Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova, a former world No.5, will face Quirine Lemoine of the Netherlands in the last 16.
Lemoine fought back from a set down against the No.14 seed to book her place in the third round, beating South African Chanelle Simmonds 5-7 6-4 6-4.
Tom Farquharson, a wildcard entry into the boys’ singles main draw, also had a straight forward passage into the third round after his opponent, Arthur de Greef of Belgium, was forced to retire with the score standing at 6-0 1-0 in the Brit’s favour.
Having come from behind to win his first round match against Italian Alessandro Bega 3-6 6-4 6-2, Farquharson will now meet No.3 seed Bernard Tomic, the highly rated Australian who reached the second round of his home Grand Slam in January.
Elsewhere in the junior event, Dave Thomson, Richard Gabb, Ashley Hewitt, Steph Cornish and Alexandra Walker all missed out on a place in the last 16, losing hard fought second round matches. The boys’ and girls’ doubles events were also scheduled to get under way on Tuesday with a number of British players in action.
