British challenge ends in Wimbledon junior event

Thursday, July 02, 2009

The British challenge in the junior event at Wimbledon ended on Thursday as five pairs bowed out in the doubles second round.

George Morgan and Lewis Burton competed in the match of the day as they were defeated in a three sets marathon on Court 12, losing to Spain’s Carlos Boluda-Purkiss and Venezuela’s David Souto 6-7(3) 7-5 15-17.

In a nail biting final set, Morgan and Burton held a number of match points but could not convert the chances leaving their opponents to gain the decisive break at 15 games all.

On one of the match point opportunities, the British pair, along with everyone else around the court, thought they were through to the third round only for the umpire to overrule a tight line call.

Heather Watson and Poland’s Magda Linette, the No.6 seeds who won the ITF Grade 1 title together in Roehampton last week, were also knocked out in a hard fought three-setter.

After splitting the first two sets, Japanese duo Miyabi Inoue and Sachie Ishizu broke in consecutive service games to overturn a 3-1 deficit in the decider, eventually beating Watson and Linette 2-6 6-3 6-4.

Tom Farquharson and Stefan Sterland-Markovic saw a set lead slip away as they lost to German Alexandros-Ferdinandos Georgoudas and Belarusian Andrei Vasilevski 6-4 2-6 2-6. Meanwhile, two other British pairs, Jack Carpenter and James Marsalek, and Samantha Vickers and Lisa Whybourn, both bowed out in straight sets.
