Tursunov crowned AEGON International champion

Saturday, June 20, 2009

Dmitry Tursunov won the AEGON International men’s singles title in Eastbourne on Saturday.

Tursunov, the favourite going into the match, defeated Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic 6-3 7-6(5) to win his first grass court trophy.

The Russian No.2 seed broke serve once in the first set and did not face a break point all day, notching 12 aces en route to victory.

“It’s good to win, it doesn’t matter which surface it is on,” said Tursunov.

“It is human nature to want to beat someone else whether it’s Eastbourne, Wimbledon a Futures or Challenger event or beating your grandmother at chequers, it feels good to win.

“Playing on grass can be tough because we only get three or four weeks on it so players are a bit like cats in water, but it seems like a good surface to me. Obviously it’s given me some practice on grass which is very important in the lead-in to Wimbledon,”

Tursunov, who will be seeded No.25 at Wimbledon next week, now has six career titles to his name, his previous five all coming on hard courts.

Ranked 99 places behind Tursunov at No.126 in the world Dancevic, enjoyed a fine run to the final with wins over Fabrice Santoro and top seed Igor Andreev along the way.

The last match on Centre Court at Devonshire Park will be the women’s doubles final, Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs against Akgul Amanmuradova and Ai Sugiyama.

Uzbekistan’s Akgul Amanmuradova and Japan’s Ai Sugiyama won the women’s doubles title in the last match of the tournament, beating Australian duo Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs 6-4 6-3.
