Schools champions decided in Bolton

Monday, March 23, 2009

The Senior Students National Finals for AEGON Team Tennis Schools were contested over the weekend at Bolton Arena.

The competition, which is open to players in school years 11 to 13 with a rating of 7.1 or lower, is split into three events – boys, girls and mixed.

Eight teams in each event competed for the titles with initial round robin groups of four being followed by finals for the top teams.

Bournemouth School won the boys’ title after claiming a 4-2 victory over Coopers’ Company & Coborn School, who had booked a place in the final by winning a tiebreak shoot-out against Hills Road Sixth Form College.

“The win in the Senior Students is the pinnacle of an excellent year for tennis at Bournemouth School,” said Nigel Oates, the teacher in charge of the winning team. “Team Tennis is a great competition engendering spirit and cooperation among players and captains.”

Having reached the final without losing a rubber, Boston Grammar Schools Federation lifted the girls’ trophy after winning 4-2 against Greenhead College, one of only two teams, along with Ellesmere College, to be represented in all three events.

In the mixed event, Worthing College were crowned champions after coming through a closely fought final, eventually defeating St. Peter’s High School & Sixth Form College 3-1.

In the round robin stage, Worthing College came through Group B with the loss of only one rubber while Group A saw five tiebreak shoot-outs and a three-way count back to decide who should progress to the final.
