In the men’s doubles, Jamie Murray and Serbian partner Dusan Vemic will be back in action on Thursday when they face either Latvian Ernests Gulbis and Russian Igor Kunitsyn or Finn Jarkko Nieminen and Swede Robin Soderling in the last eight.
Bloomers suffers narrow defeat in Marseille
Despite an impressive display of serving, Richard Bloomfield bowed out in the singles first round at Open 13 in Marseille.
Bloomfield, who won three qualifying matches to reach the main draw, did not face a break point but was eventually knocked out in two tie-break sets, losing to Italian Simon Bolelli 6-7(5) 6-7(1).
Ross Hutchins and Aussie Stephen Huss will begin their doubles campaign in Marseille on Wednesday when they meet Bloomfield’s conqueror Bolelli and fellow Italian Andreas Seppi.
Currently at a career high doubles world ranking of No.42, Hutchins will be buoyed by his recent call up to the AEGON GB Davis Cup team who are scheduled to take on Ukraine at Braehead Arena in Renfrewshire from 6th-8th March.
Elsewhere, Anna Smith and Johanna Larsson of Sweden lost their first round doubles match in Bogota while James Auckland and German Daniel Brands got off to a winning start at the €106.5k Challenger in Belgrade.
