Anne Keothavong defeated her doubles partner on Monday to reach the second round at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis.
Seeded No.4, Keothavong lost her serve once in the first set before eventually running out an easy winner, beating Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 3-6 6-3 6-1.
The British No.1, who is currently at a career high world ranking of No.52, will now meet Portuguese wildcard Michelle Larcher de Brito in the last 16.
Keothavong and Camerin will begin their doubles campaign on Tuesday against Hungarian Melinda Czink and Canadian Stephanie Dubois.
Partnering American Courtney Nagle, Sarah Borwell is also competing in the doubles and will face No.2 seeds Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the first round.
Meanwhile, Mel South, currently ranked one place outside the world’s top 100, lost her opening singles match to the No.3 seed from Czech Republic, Lucie Safarova, 2-6 2-6.
Murray & Vemic off to a winning start
Jamie Murray and Serbian Dusan Vemic opened their doubles account in Memphis with a routine victory on Monday.
Murray and Vemic, who began playing together in January, took less than an hour to knock out the British doubles No.1’s former partner, Max Mirnyi of Belarus, and American Robert Kendrick 6-3 6-2.
The No.2 seeds will be vying to reach their first semi-final together when they take on either Latvian Ernests Gulbis and Russian Igor Kunitsyn or Finn Jarkko Nieminen and Swede Robin Soderling in the last eight.
Elsewhere, Richard Bloomfield, who won three matches to qualify for the main draw, will face Italian Simon Bolelli in Tuesday’s first round at Open 13 in Marseille while Ross Hutchins and Aussie partner Stephen Huss are competing in the doubles.
At the Copa Sony Ericsson Colsanitas in Bogota, a women’s $220k event, Anna Smith is playing doubles with Johanna Larsson of Sweden while Alex Bogdanovic and James Auckland are both competing at the €106k Challenger in Belgrade.
