Keothavong through to semis in Memphis

Friday, February 20, 2009

Anne Keothavong produced a battling performance to reach the semi-final at the RMK Championships in Memphis.

Seeded No.4, Keothavong took three sets to defeat Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 6-2 1-6 6-2 on Thursday.

The British No.1 recovered well from a bad start, losing the first two games before reeling off six in a row to take the first set.

Erakovic fought back strongly in the second set but could offer little resistance in the decider as the momentum swung once again.

The 25 year-old from Hackney raced into a 4-0 lead before eventually clinching victory in just over two hours – avenging the straight sets defeat she suffered in the Surbiton Trophy final last summer.

Keothavong, who will be playing in her second WTA Tour semi-final of the year when play gets under way on Friday, will meet the top seed from Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki, who is currently at a career high world ranking of No.12.

In the men’s event, Jamie Murray and Dusan Vemic of Serbia will face Latvian Ernests Gulbis and Russian Igor Kunitsyn in Friday’s doubles quarter-final as they bid to reach their first semi-final together.

Hutchins & Huss march on in Marseille

Ross Hutchins and Aussie partner Stephen Huss are safely through to Saturday’s doubles semi-final at Open 13 in Marseille after another straight sets win.

Hutchins and Huss, who are seeded No.4, saw off the German pairing of Christopher Kas and Rainer Schuettler 6-1 7-6(4) to set up a semi-final clash with either French duo Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra or South African Wesley Moodie and Belgian Dick Norman.

Elsewhere, Georgie Stoop is scheduled to meet the No.1 seed from Belgium, Yanina Wickmayer, in the $25k semi-final in Arizona while Josh Goodall has reached the last eight at the $15k event in Trento, Italy.
