Sunday, February 22, 2009

Great Britain’s 14&U boys’ team have been crowned champions at the Tennis Europe Winter Cup by HEAD in Pruhonice, Czech Republic.

The GB team of Chris Pearce, Luke Bambridge and Evan Hoyt completed their victory by defeating France 3-0 on Sunday.

In two hard fought singles rubbers, Pearce and Bambridge gave Britain an unassailable lead with wins over Enzo Couacaud 7-6(2) 3-6 6-2 and Enzo Py 6-7(5) 6-4 9-7.

Pearce then teamed up with Hoyt in the doubles to complete the rout, beating Couacaud and Florian Lakat 6-4 6-2.

In the earlier rounds on Friday and Saturday, the GB team eased past Belarus 3-0 and Netherlands 3-0 losing just one set along the way.

"It was an outstanding effort by the boys," said Iain Hughes, the GB Captain. "To show such competitive qualities and team spirit at the end of the indoor season, each having played over 30 competitive matches in 8 weeks, was a testament to themselves and their programmes. It is a fantastic start to the year."

Great Britain have now won the 14&U competition three times with their most recent victory coming in 2001 when a team led by Andy Murray triumphed.

Meanwhile, Britain finished sixth at the girls’ event in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. Having been beaten by Belgium on Friday, the GB team of Katy Dunne, Pippa Horn and Beth Askew defeated Serbia before losing to Czech Republic on the final day.
