Bloomfield clinches $10k title in London

Monday, November 03, 2008

Richard Bloomfield recorded his second tournament victory of the year on Sunday by winning the $10k singles title at London’s Campden Hill LTC.

Having cruised through his opening match, Bloomfield was forced to dig deep to win the next two rounds, beating Junior National Champion Dan Cox and Yann Marti of Switzerland in closely fought battles.

However, the British No 5 regained his composure in the last four by defeating fellow Brit Matt Illingworth 6-1 6-3 and continued the momentum into the final, seeing off Romanian Petru-Alexandru Luncanu 6-2 7-6(2).

In January, the 25 year-old from Norfolk lifted the singles and doubles trophies at the $10k event in Sunderland while he also reached the singles final at the Manchester Challenger in June.

In the doubles, Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski claimed their second consecutive doubles title beating Ivan Cerovic and Daniel Danilovic 6-4 7-6(9) in the final. Last week, the British duo defeated the same pair, Cerovic and Danilovic, to win the $10k title in Glasgow.

Matt Leahy and Olivia Smith won the men’s and women’s British Tour singles titles in Taunton. Leahy has now climbed to the top of the leader board while Smith gained valuable points ahead of the season ending British Tour Masters at the City of Nottingham Tennis Centre in December.

In junior tennis, Daniel Cochrane partnered Ciaran Fitzgerald of Ireland to win the ITF Grade 5 doubles title in Andorra. In the singles, Yorkshire's Joshua Gledden went one better than his recent semi-final performance in Oslo by reaching the final, narrowly losing to Benjamin Cselenko in three sets.

Taking place in Nottingham at the weekend, the NEC Wheelchair Tour event saw Lucy Shuker clinch the singles title before teaming up with Jordanne Whiley to lift the doubles trophy [read more].
