Murray seals semi-final spot in Madrid

Friday, October 17, 2008

Andy Murray comprehensively beat Gael Monfils to book a semi-final spot at the Masters Series event in Madrid. The British No 1 recorded a straight forward 6-2 6-2 victory over the Frenchman on Friday.

After getting off to a shaky start by losing his opening service game, Murray immediately broke back and took control of the match. A further two breaks saw the 21 year-old clinch the opening set with relative ease.

The second set continued in a similar fashion with Murray’s disheartened opponent offering little resistance to the Scot’s devastating play from the back of the court. Despite breaking the world No 4 when trailing 1-5, an error-prone Monfils eventually ended proceedings after just over an hour with a double fault.

Murray will now face Roger Federer on Saturday in a re-match of September’s US Open final when the Swiss world No 2 defeated Murray in three sets.
