Jamie Murray and American Liezel Huber narrowly missed out on becoming the US Open mixed doubles champions in New York. The pair lost against the No 5 seeds, Indian Leander Paes and Zimbabwean Cara Black, 6-7(6) 4-6 in Thursday’s final.
Murray and Huber led 6-4 in the first set tie-break but a good volley from Black and a netted volley from Murray saw the pair of chances disappear. Two points later Paes threaded a winner down the middle to seal the set.
In the second, Murray was broken in the fifth game which proved enough of an advantage for Paes and Black who proceeded to serve out the match.
However, it was another fine performance from Murray and Huber who have now reached two Grand Slam semi-finals and one final together since the Brit’s success at The Championships with Serb Jelena Jankovic in 2007.
In the boys’ event, Dan Cox lost in the singles third round against American Chase Buchanan 3-6 6-7(9). The 17 year-old also bowed out in the doubles third round with Australian Dane Propoggia losing to Austrian Nikolaus Moser and German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-4 3-6 [4-10].
