Warwickshire dominate in Eastbourne

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Warwickshire ladies continue to dominate group one of the Summer County Cup while Lancashire men are favourites in the men's event.

Warwickshire ladies are the only unbeaten side in group one and are firm favourites to regain the title they last won in 2006 after another impressive display of grass court tennis. The Midlands side overcame Buckinghamshire 6-3 with matches against Surrey and Hertfordshire remaining.

Hertfordshire ladies secured their second win of the week in a closely fought match against Surrey, eventually winning 5-4 while Lancashire triumphed against South Wales who are yet to record a win since their return to group one.

There were upsets in the men's event with Yorkshire who had been so dominate in their matches on the first two days of the competition, losing 5-4 to North of Scotland. The Scottish side secured their first win of their 2008 campaign and credit should go to Colin Fleming and Jonathan Pankhurst who are yet to drop a rubber this week.

Yorkshire's loss gave added importance to the match between Lancashire and Hertfordshire who had both picked up two wins during the week. It was Hertfordshire who got off to the better start, winning all three of their first round matches before Lancashire dominated the second round of matches to level the score at 3-3. Wins for Mark Schofield and Ken Skupski and younger brother Neal and Dan Smethurst secured the victory for Lancashire and a place at the top of the leader board.
