Lancs and Warwickshire win Summer County Cup titles

Friday, July 25, 2008

Lancashire men and Warwickshire ladies were crowned Summer County Cup champions in Eastbourne after a week of fierce competition.

Lancashire men secured their first victory in over thirty years with a straight forward 5-1 victory over Yorkshire. The side, led by Mark Schofield, were unbeaten throughout the week in Eastbourne's Devonshire Park and thoroughly deserved their title.

Speaking after the match, Schofield was understandably delighted with his team's performance. "It has been a great week for us in Eastbourne. I can't fault the boys for their enthusiasm and we had a really good team spirit. The courts were in fantastic shape and we're already looking forward to coming back here to defend our title."

Lancashire will be hoping that they have a better week as defending champions in 2009 than Kent who, having won the event in 2007, failed to win match in their 2008 campaign and they, along with Cheshire have been relegated to group two.

The women's event had come down to a winner takes all match between Warwickshire and Hertfordshire with both sides having won three matches during the week. The result could not have been closer with the score level at 3 rubbers apiece going into the last round.

Victories for Hannah Grady and Leyla Ogan over Hertfordshire's third pair Holly Bagshaw and Katy Williams, and a comprehensive 6-0 6-1 victory for Warwickshire's Louise Latimer and Luisa Cowper secured a second County Cup title for Warwickshire in the three years.

Last year's champions Lancashire and South Wales were relegated to Group two having finished fifth and sixth respectively. They will be replaced in group one by Leicestershire and Essex.
