GB 14U girls at the Opening Ceremony ( L to R - Captain Helen Reesby, Jazzi Plews, Gaby Taylor and Maia Lumsden)
The Great Britain 14U girls team of Maia Lumsden, Jazzi Plews and Gabriella Taylor scored the first ever win for GB in this category of the Tennis Europe Summer Cups, beating Germany 2-0 in the final.
The win marks the first time since 1979 that a British girls’ team has won a Summer Cups title, and is the first win in this age category.
The final was a one-sided affair, with Plews conceding just three games in the opening rubber against Katharina Gerlach before Lumsden gave the team an unassailable 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Lena Rueffer.
In the boys 14U competition GB finished third, having lost out to in their semi-final to Germany but beating Switzerland 2-1 in the third/fourth place play-off.
The Summer Cups also serve as the European qualifying competition for the ITF World Junior Tennis tournament and both the GB 14U boys and girls teams have qualified. The world’s team event for 14Us takes place in Prostejov in August.
The remaining European Summer Cups events, for players aged 16U and 18U, will be played during the first week of August.
