GB 14U boys Winter Cups winners
The GB 14U boys’ team have lifted the winner’s trophy in the Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD in Correggio, Italy over the weekend.
Captained by Chris Wilkinson, the GB team consisting of Samuel Ferguson, Jay Clarke and Marcus Walters defeated Germany and Hungary in the opening rounds before facing Sweden in the final.
After a decisive doubles match was required to determine the winner, GB overcame Sweden 2-1
Jay Clarke had put GB ahead after a 6-4, 6-0 win over Filip Malbasic in the opening singles. Mikael Yemer then levelled the tie by beating Samuel Ferguson 6-2, 6-3.
In the deciding doubles, Malbasic & Yemer struck first, taking the first set 6-4. Clarke & Ferguson then mounted a fierce comeback, dropping just one game to level the match 6-1. The momentum stayed with the British pair during the final set, which they won 6-3 to ensure a Winter Cups title for GB.
Julian Cash, Josef Dodrigde, Adam Glynn and Captain Martin Weston were also in action over the weekend competing in the 16U Winter Cups in Rochin, France.
After being defeated by Sweden, the GB team then contended for fifth position in their play-off matches.
The GB team defeated Romania 2-1 and overcame Italy 3-0 to claim the fifth position.
