U18 AEGON County Cup 2010 (Boys) Captains Report

Venue: Redbridge, Essex

Team:  Elliot Barnwell, Jack Busby, Matthew Finnerty, Jack Lee, David Taylor, Oliver Plaskitt, Richard Westman and John Keighley

Day 1 Warwickshire v Essex:

A lot of close matches and it had to be said all good quality, noticeable wins from Oliver Plaskitt who debuted and was also the youngest member of the team at 15.  Elliot lost a very tight three setter at number 1, which was an important match for both Warwickshire and Essex.

Score: Warwickshire 4 – 5 Essex

Day 2 Warwickshire v Hertfordshire:

Hertfordshire easily beat Somerset 8-1 earlier in the event so we knew we had a tough task ahead.  It was a gallant effort but we lost a couple of close tie-breaks.  Again special praise should be given to Oliver Plaskitt and also Jack Busby for excellent performances.

Score: Warwickshire 3 – 6 Hertfordshire

Day 3 Warwickshire v Somerset:

With Somerset having 1 and 2 players both with ATP Rankings we were really up against it, however outstanding efforts by all players meant we achieved a very tense 5-4 victory over Somerset in the final doubles, thus avoiding relegation.

In conclusion a good weekend of tennis the team lacked a little depth due to key players being unable to play however with the levels of talent in the other county teams staying in Division 2 was an achievement in itself.
