Henley in Arden Tennis Club held their annual club championships and Open Day at the Stratford Road clubhouse last Sunday and despite reports of flash flooding only 5 miles away, Henley escaped the deluge and everyone enjoyed a great afternoon of tennis.
Sara Butler beat daughter Lucy 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 to win the ladies singles, and was presented with the trophy by her mother in law, former member, Beryl. Sara then went on to win the ladies doubles title with Gillian Henson 6-0, 6-0 and the mixed doubles title with our youngest winner Farrell Treacy 6-3, 6-2.
The men’s singles was a very close match between club coach Neil Supperstone and Henley A team member Ben Summers. Ben won the first set 7-6, lost the second set 6-7, and was finally beaten 8-10 in the championship tie break. Meanwhile his father Rob Summers won the men’s doubles, with Matthew Williams 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
Refreshments were served and club members were joined by family, supporters and potential new members, who had come to enjoy a taste of the friendly club. Henley was especially delighted to welcome several local schoolchildren who they are coaching in local schools as part of a WLTA initiative. For information on the club please contact club secretary Judith Mathias on 01564 792378.
