Men’s & Ladies Doubles Championships 2010 @ Rugby LTC

Sunday 18th July saw the Rugby LTC Men’s and Ladies Doubles Championships for 2010 held at Webb Ellis Road. A total of 7 Men’s pairs and 12 Ladies pairs battled it out for this year’s title.

The Ladies event was run as 2 round robin groups consisting of 6 pairs who all played each other in the group. Their final placing in the group determining which knockout they went into. The 2 group winners were the holders, Rebecca Smith & Natalie Victoros and Pam Bond & Sue Barnes. Rachael Baker & Andrea Randle and Natalie Warren & Anna Grime were both very close runners-up. This made for some fantastic competitive matches in the semi finals and all players put on a great show for the watching audience. Natalie & Anna grafted out a well deserved 6-3 win against Pam & Sue which included a marathon last game. Meanwhile, the other semi ebbed and flowed and went right down to a deciding tiebreak which the delighted Rachael & Andrea came out on top by 7 points to 4. The final was once again full of great tennis shots, but the experience of Rachael & Andrea helped them to overcome Natalie & Anna 6-1.

In the other Ladies events, Sue Leah & Robyn Crighton defeated Jackie Alabaster & Harriet Tuite-Dalton 6-1 in the 3rd/4th knockout and Jo & Katy Outhwaite beat Lynda Naul & Erica Fothergill 6-1 in the final of 5th/6th knockout.

The Men’s event was run as one round robin, where all the pairs played each other. The top 2 pairs of David Warren & Chris Haynes and Marcus Powell & John Victoros then went on to play out the final. Once again, this match was a cracker and delighted the watching crowd. All 4 players battled hard to win their serves. This resulted in a deciding tiebreak at 5 games all, which saw Marcus & John edge their noses in front for a 7-5 win. The remaining men played in a fun knockout event which Steve Barnes & Simon Parker beat Duncan Grime & Nigel Trodd 10 points to 8.
