North Wales Youngsters in Primary Schools Competition Success

Schools Mini Tennis

Young tennis players from Conwy, Wrexham and Flintshire were among the winners as the top players from primary schools across North Wales came together for their big events of the year.

The North Wales Mini Tennis Schools finals took place at the North Wales Regional Tennis Centre, Wrexham, and featured youngsters who had qualified through qualifying events across five local authorities in North Wales - Gwynedd, Conwy, Flintshire, Wrexham and Powys.

The events are coordinated locally by tennis development and sport development staff and local coaches, and most are held at a local tennis club, tennis centre or school site.  The North Wales local authority stages this year involved 74 schools and 355 teams - equating to 1420 players,

The Mini Tennis Red competition is for year 3 and below; the Orange for year 5 and below, and Green for year 6 and below.

Final results were:

Red
Girls - Winners: Pendorlan, Conwy; Runners-up: Cynddelw, Wrexham;
Boys - Winners: St Marys, Wrexham; Runners-up: Guilsfield, Powys;

Orange
Girls – Winners: Rydal, Conwy; Runners-up: St Marys, Wrexham;
Boys - Winners: Bryn Coch, Flintshire; Runners-up: Llanidloes, Powys;

Green
Girls – Winners: St Marys, Wrexham; Runners-up: Bod Alaw, Conwy;
Boys - Winners: Bryn Coch, Flintshire; Runners-up: Bod Alaw, Conwy.

Mini Tennis gives players, aged 10 and under, the chance to enjoy the fun of competitive tennis.  They play in teams of four at three levels, according to age and ability.  These are modified versions of the full game, on smaller courts with slower balls and small rackets. As children get older, the court and racket sizes increase and the balls get bouncier!

“This was another tremendous event, which attracted interest from schools right across North Wales,” said Pam Griffiths, North Wales Tennis Manager with Tennis Wales.  The Schools Mini Tennis competition is run by Tennis Wales, the governing body for tennis in Wales.
