Norfolk’s ladies triumphed on a tense last day to clinch the division four title and win promotion to division three of the AEGON Summer County Cup.
The county, along with Yorkshire, West of Scotland, Nottinghamshire, North Wales and Avon, were competing in the week long event held at West Worthing Club.
Captain Lucy Brooks and her team defeated Nottinghamshire by five rubbers to four on the final day to end a gruelling week of tennis. The teams each have three doubles pairs who all play three full matches five days in a row.
“It’s unbelievable but we’ve held up pretty well although the body hurts a little bit now. At the beginning of the week we struggled to even get a team together so to actually go up is awesome,” said Lucy.
Norfolk have had two quick-fire promotions and will be hoping to do the same next year when they tackle division three of the competition. “Anything is possible after this week. We will try to draft in a couple of players and see what we can do,” said Lucy, who won 13 out of her 15 matches with partner Karen Highfield.
Steve Holmes, manager of West Worthing Club, declared the week a success and outlined the importance of the event. “It gives a focus for the club to prepare itself for the summer season and it keeps the clubs profile within the tennis fraternity at the right level which are both key to the club.”
The club is now looking forward to hosting the AEGON British tour and Sussex Open which takes place between the 7th and 14th of August.
