Minehead Lawn Tennis Club held their annual Primary School Challenge on a perfect summer’s day. For the first time this event received sponsorship from Cranmers Optometrists who are supporting the club and junior tennis. All the local first and middle schools entered teams and almost 100 children, their teachers and their families attended.
During the morning years 5 + 6 from the three middle schools competed playing on the full court with both singles and doubles competitions. Playing round robin box style matches with sudden death tie breaks all children had lots of time to show off their skills on court with mum, dad, granny, granddad and teacher watching.
During the afternoon it was the turn of the first schools playing mini tennis on half courts with lower nets and softer balls. The enthusiasm and energy of these younger children from years 3 + 4 was boundless as rackets were swung, balls smashed and points scored. Dunster First School once again proved their prowess at this event and as always featured strongly.
An exhibition match was played in the afternoon with British number 1 wheelchair champion Lucy Shuker playing with some club members and showing just what can be achieved through dedication, commitment, hard work and talent in overcoming adversity. Lucy has competed around the world playing recently at the Australian open, the Beijing Olympics and is playing Wimbledon again this year.
Kate Webb and Damien Reavey partners at Cranmers Optometrists presented prizes, trophies and tee shirts.
