Judy Murray US Open Blog

Judy Murray

More from Judy Murray at the US Open, and it's a mixed day for the Scots, with Andy winning but Elena and Colin both losing out.

"Got back late from the courts tonight because I stayed to watch Bally.  By the time she got on (6pm) it was significantly cooler.  Thank goodness.  Unfortunately she lost 7-6 6-2 to big hitting Petra Kvitova, the Czech leftie who reached the semi at Wimbledon this year.  The first set was very close but if the outcome of the match had been decided by fight and determination, Bally would have taken it.  I thought she played really well but Kvitova times the ball beautifully and keeps great depth with a lot of firepower. Tonight she was just a little better than Bally.

I got a bit of burnage on my back during Andy's match where the on-court temperature was 110.  In situations like that, you want to get off as quickly as you can so a three set win in just under 2 hours was ideal.

What wasn't ideal was the monster camera and two microphones invading our player guest box.  Apparently tv wants to be able to pick up everything that's said / shouted by the coach and entourage.  Why?????  I heard Fed complained about it but it was upheld.  Some coaches will have to be careful what they are shouting, that's for sure.

As if that wasn't annoying enough, we had the world's largest man a couple of rows behind us wading his way through what must have been a barrel of crisps.  Lasted 3 sets anyway.  No wonder he's the worlds largest man.

Quite a lot of celebs at the night matches - Usher, John Legend, Kanye West, Donald Trump, Alex Baldwin....

Oops.  Forgot to mention that Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski went out of the men's doubles today to Argie duo Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zeballos.  Straight sets.  Disappointing for them.  They were on same time as Andy so I didn't see any of it.

Watching ARod v Tipsarevic on tv.  ARod looks a bit lethargic and Tipsy looks like an owl in those bizarre glasses.  The crowd is a bit stunned coz ARods so subdued.  He usually fires up the crowd out here in NY but it's Tipsy who is doing all the firing right now.  He's 5-2 up in the third and it's set all.  Roddick just got footfaulted (right foot) and is arguing like crazy that he never moves his right foot on serve.  I have to say he has a point, he just doesn't bring his right foot through so I can understand why he's so pissed.  Now he's rushing and 0-40 down.  Still going on about the footfault.  Crowds getting on his case.  Action replay is showing that he did foot fault but with the left foot.  Lineswoman got mixed up between left and right.  Mmmmm!  This has actually got him (and the crowd) going and he's now bombing down the serves and holds from 0-40.  5-3 Tipsy.  And Roddick still rabbiting on about the call.

I will leave you with this funny from today.  LTA physio Rob Hill was talking about players who favour "beach workouts" in the gym, rather than focussing on exercises that will actually help their tennis.  One such player is Alex Bogdanovic who, when questioned on why he wasn't doing his shoulder strengthening exercises, came out with the classic "chicks don't dig rotator cuffs, chicks dig pecs."  Hilarious.

Set for Tipsy.  Roddick goes off to change his shirt.  Hope he's changed his tune too.

More on Friday."
