Helensburgh's Gordon Reid has risen to a new career best world ranking of No 15 this week after reaching his first ITF Super Series quarter-final at last week's British Open in Nottingham. The 18-year-old British No 2 is now training in the Netherlands this week before playing in next week's Belgian Open. Reid has improved on his previous career best by one place after progressing to the last eight of the British Open for the first time, having started this year's event with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Frenchman Denis Lechaplain. After defending his points for reaching the second round of the British Open last year, the unseeded Reid then defeated French eighth seed Frederic Cazeaudumec 6-3, 6-2 to book his place in the quarter-finals against Dutch fourth seed and world No 7 Ronald Vink. Vink went on to reach Sunday's men's singles final after beating Reid 6-4, 6-4, leaving the young Scot in a philosophical mood. "I thought I had a good chance, we'd been to three sets the only other time we've played each other at the World Team Cup in May and I had my chances in the match, I just couldn't take them all on the day, but it's good to have reached the quarter-finals for the first time," said Reid, who was also a quarter-finalist in the men's doubles before he and fellow Briton Marc McCarroll bowed out to third seeds and eventual tournament runners-up Robin Ammerlaan and Tom Egberink of the Netherlands.
