Glasgow's Maia Lumsden has won the AEGON Junior Grand Prix Masters 12U event which took place at Roehampton over the weekend.
Maia (David Lloyd, Glasgow West End) defeated Gabriella Taylor 6-2, 6-2 to secure victory in the final of the girls’ event. David Lloyd coach, Toby Smith, will have been happy to see James Shemilt, part of his Academy along with Maia, making the semi final of the boys event. Anastasia Mikheeva won the consolation draw following victory over Avon's Katie Swan, 6-2, 6-3.
Lumsden is making a habit of picking up silverware at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton. In December at the British Tennis Awards Ceremony, she was awarded the Highland Spring Hot Shots Tour Award setting up a partnership with Highland Spring which will see the Scottish water giant become Maia’s official water supplier for 2010.
Awarded to an AEGON FutureStar who has demonstrated a high level of enthusiasm and dedication to the sport during 2009, Maia was delighted to receive the award.
“I’m really excited to win this award because I love tennis. This year has been a great year for me – I went to Holland for the qualifying of the European Championships and then went to Corsica for the Finals. We eventually finished fifth overall which was great. I’m really looking forward to next year and can’t wait to get back on court!”
Sally Stanley, marketing director of Highland Spring commented:
“Maia is a fantastic ambassador for British tennis and has performed extremely well in 2009 and I’m sure 2010 will be another exciting year for her.
Highland Spring is committed to supporting British tennis from a grassroots level and we hope our association with inspirational sports stars such as Andy and Jamie Murray will inspire and encourage more children to pick up a racquet and play tennis.”
The AEGON FutureStars programme recognises and supports some of the best juniors in the country for their age group. At only 12-years-old, Maia is already making a name for herself in the sport. She will be hoping that her win this weekend will propel her to the top of the 12 & under rankings, where she currently sits third. Last summer she made it all the way to the semi-finals of the 12 & Under AEGON Junior Nationals despite being a year younger than the majority of other competitors.
