Schools tennis in Burnley is enjoying success with nearly every school in the town entering this year’s Primary Schools Tennis Competition.
Twenty-seven of the twenty-nine schools in the East Lancashire town entered this year’s competition, following a programme of coaching, courses and equipment donations organised by the Burnley Schools Sports Partnership.
Iain Taylor, who is part of the Community Sports Coaching Team, has delivered tennis coaching sessions in local primary schools and parks, encouraging children to take up the sport and to prepare children from Years 3 and 4 to compete in the annual schools competition.
In addition, Primary Schools Teachers Courses have been organised by the Tennis Foundation, with bags of AEGON Schools Tennis equipment being donated to all the schools who have attended. Each year a Tennis Leaders Award, takes place to train secondary school children to help deliver tennis coaching and competitions. This year’s Tennis Leaders have been helping support the schools competitions as well as coaching sessions at Burnley Tennis Club, which is the only Tennis Clubmark venue in the borough.
“Working together with the Schools Sports Partnership has allowed schools tennis in Burnley to be more successful than ever” said tennis coach, Iain Taylor.
“Our aim next year is to have every school in the borough in the primary schools competition and in doing so we would be the first borough in Lancashire to achieve this goal.”
