The structure and vision for British tennis is outlined within this area, it is hoped the effects will be felt out in the tennis community by you, the tennis people. Find below the members of the LTA Board, who bring expertise and experience to the organisation from a wide range of backgrounds.
Peter Bretherton was elected as LTA President at the AGM on 15 December 2010, following his nomination by the Main Board and Council. Peter was previously Deputy President (2009-2010); has been on the Main Board of the LTA since 2001 and was a Councillor for Lancashire from 1995 to 2009.
Peter, 65, has a keen interest in sport, particularly in tennis, in which he competed at a high standard playing for both Kent and Lancashire. An active veteran, he won the National Veterans’ 45 & over Grass Court Doubles Championships of Great Britain in 1990.
Cathie Sabin was elected as LTA Deputy President at the AGM on 15 December 2010, following her nomination by the Main Board. Cathie is a Council-elected member of the Main Board.
Cathie is a teacher by profession, and was previously Assistant Head of a Specialist Sports College and national Tennis Teacher of the Year. Now retired, she has a long-standing involvement in tennis, particularly in the Shropshire and Midlands area. She is a qualified referee, President of Shropshire LTA, and has been Chair of the AEGON Classic event in Edgbaston since 2006.
Andrew joined the LTA Council representing the Channel Islands in 1993 and has served on the Investment and Funding Committees. A qualified accountant, he has gained wide experience in international business affairs and in financial and tax planning. He is currently Chairman of the Caversham Group of Companies providing financial and fiduciary services in Jersey, Geneva and London.
Andrew was President of the CILTA from 1995 to 2004. He was appointed Deputy Honorary Treasurer of the LTA by the Council at its meeting in November 2007 and has been the Honorary Treasurer since 2009.
Richard is Chairman of Virgin Active, Non Executive Director of Whitbread PLC, Chairman of the European Division of Groupe Aeroplan, and an Operating Partner at Advent International (who recently completed the acquisition of DFS, the leading furniture company, where Richard will become Chairman).
Prior to these appointments, Richard was Chief Executive of Alliance Boots from 2003 until 2007, when he departed after completing its £11bn sale to KKR.
Val Gooding was formerly chief executive of healthcare company BUPA. She is a non-executive director of the Compass Group and Standard Chartered Bank. Val sits on the council of Warwick University and advises Warwick Business School and is a trustee of the British Museum.
She was awarded the CBE for services to business in 2002. As one of the independent non-executive directors, Val sits on the Remuneration Committee of the LTA.
Bob joined the LTA Council in 2003 representing Hampshire & Isle of Wight. He is a past Chairman of the County Association and is at present Chairman of the County Performance Committee and sits on the County Executive Committee.
At the LTA he has served on the Councillor Liaison Committee and Operations Board and is currently Deputy Chair of the Tennis Development Committee and Chairman of the Risk Advisory Committee.
He has played County tennis throughout his life and continues to be active in veterans tennis.
Bob is a Chartered Engineer by profession and has worked in the petrochemical industry throughout his working life, most recently as Managing Director of Polimeri Europa UK, a subsidiary of ENI the Italian oil and gas multinational.
Tony Lemons joined the LTA Council in 1998 representing Cambridge University Lawn Tennis Club of which he is an Honorary Vice-President.
Professionally, as Director of Physical Education, he is currently responsible for all aspects of sport at the University of Cambridge including the management of facilities and associated staff, the design and development of new facilities, fundraising, sponsorship, licensing, bursaries and scholarships.
On behalf of the University he exercises general responsibility for all University sports clubs and their activities including varsity matches. He has served on a number of LTA boards and committees including the National Tennis Facilities Divisional Board from 2001-2005 and from 2005-2009 has been a member of the Funding Committee (as Chairman from 2007-2009).
Tony is a past Chairman of the British Students Sports Federation and was Chef de Mission of the British Student’s Team. He is a Fellow of Hughes Hall College, Cambridge.
Tom joined the LTA Council representing Northumberland in 2000. He has served on the County & Club Committee, the Officiating Committee, the Professional Tennis Advisory & Scrutiny Board, the Affiliation Review Working Party, the County Cup Review Working Party and the Council Retirement Working Party.
As a qualified referee, he is a member of ABTO and holds the ITF Gold Badge. He currently works on the Davis Cup panel of referees and for the ATP as a Challenger Supervisor as well as refereeing domestic events.
A Vice-Chairman of Northumberland LTA Council, he is currently Chairman of the County Disciplinary Committee, Chairman of Northumberland Tennis Academy (HPC) and serves on the County Executive, Tournaments, Finance, Sponsorship and Tennis Operations Committees.
Previously a Council-elected member of the Main Board, Tom succeeded Anne Clark as the Chairman of the National Tennis Operations Advisory & Scrutiny Board in January 2010.
Martin, a chartered accountant, joined the LTA Council representing Hertfordshire in 2003, where he has been a member since 1993 and Treasurer since 2000. In 2002 he was appointed Chairman of the County Tennis Committee responsible for Talent Identification and Performance Tennis. Martin served on the LTA Funding Committee before joining the Professional Tennis Advisory and Scrutiny Board of which he was appointed Chairman in 2009. He is also a member of the Investment Committee.
Peter joined the LTA Board in 2010 as the President's nomination and has previously been a member of the Professional Tennis Advisory and Scrutiny Board from 2007 to 2009.
Peter serves on the Tournament Committee at the AEGON Championships at The Queen's Club, one of the world's leading grass court tournaments, where he previously served as Managing Director.
Peter was formerly Chief Commercial Officer at Allied Domecq PLC, a FTSE 50 company. He also worked for the Mars Corporation for 17 years, where he held a number of senior management positions around the world. He currently serves as Chairman of the Little Wing Trading company, a start up business in the consumer products industry.
Peter has also been an advisor on the LTA's new commercial strategy. He is a former runner up in the British Junior Championships and played senior county tennis for Middlesex.
Roger Draper is the CEO of the LTA. He’s one of the new breed of sports leaders who are applying direct experience of competing as an elite athlete and first-rate business skills and experience to achieve radical improvement in the way sport is run.
Over the past four years he has led the transformation of British Tennis, putting in place a practical and widely acclaimed strategy, modernised the organisation, engineered the joining-up of all aspects of the sport and secured new commercial backing. He is now leading a more informed approach to sports business management ensuring the growth of British tennis is sustained and the best return on investment secured.
He has wide experience in the ‘business of sport’, this has included three years as CEO of Sport England, leading a major review and reorganisation of the £500m spent on sport in the UK, involvement in the 2012 bid and Team England’s 2006 Commonwealth Games campaign.
As an elite athlete, Roger has gained international honours in both rugby league and tennis. He lives in Surrey with his wife and two sons.
Nick Humby joined the LTA in September 2011 as Finance Director and brings experience from a wide range of roles in the Media, Football and Theatre. After qualifying with Price Waterhouse he has held Finance Director roles at Screensport, Thames Television, Pearson Television, Manchester United, Top Up TV and Vitec.
In addition to these roles he has been responsible for the development and management of a TV Playout and facilities business and while at Manchester United was responsible to the Board for the day to day running of all aspects of the Old Trafford stadium.
Nick was a non executive on The Ambassadors Theatre Group for 10 years and provided interim management services to them after the acquisition of the Live nations Venues. He was a non executive of the Modern Times Group, the Swedish based pan European broadcast group for three years. He is currently an independent member of the FA General Audit Committee and a Trustee of the Richmond Theatre trust.
Nick is married with two sons and lives in Reading.
