Stuart Smith, President of the LTA

Stuart Smith, President

With his own business as a chartered surveyor in the City of London, Stuart first became involved  in tennis as a volunteer at county and national levels in the late 1980s. Stuart  joined the LTA Council in 1990 and was appointed president in December 2005. He also sits on The Championships Committee at Wimbledon.

Derek Howorth, Deputy President & Honoury TreasurerDerek Howorth, Deputy President and Honorary Treasurer

Derek is a chartered accountant and became a partner of Helmores in 1965. He has vast experience in advising companies, both large and small, and has in-depth knowledge of contracting industries.


Val Gooding, CBEVal Gooding CBE, Independent Non-Executive Member

Val Gooding was formerly chief executive of healthcare company BUPA. She is a non-executive director of the Compass Group and Standard Chartered Bank. Val sits   on the council of Warwick University and advises Warwick Business School and is a trustee of the British Museum. She was awarded the CBE for services to business in 2002.  As one of the independent non-executive directors, Val sits on the Remuneration Committee of the LTA.

Sir Robert PhillisSir Robert Phillis, Independent Non-Executive Member

Sir Robert Phillis is a former chief executive of the Guardian Media Group, deputy director-general of the BBC and chief executive of BBC Worldwide. He was knighted in 2004 and Sir Robert chairs the Audit Committee and is a member of The Championships Committee of Management.


Tom KinlochTom Kinloch, Council-Elected Member

Tom joined the LTA Council representing Northumberland in 2000. He has served on the County & Club Committee, the Officiating Committee, the Professional Tennis Advisory & Scrutiny Board, the Affiliation Review Working Party, the County Cup Review Working Party and the Council Retirement Working Party.

As a qualified referee, he is a member of ABTO and holds the ITF Gold Badge.
He currently works on the Davis Cup panel of referees and for the ATP as a Challenger Supervisor as well as refereeing domestic events.

A Vice-Chairman of Northumberland LTA Council, he is currently Chairman of the County Disciplinary Committee, Chairman of Northumberland Tennis Academy (HPC) and serves on the County Executive, Tournaments, Finance, Sponsorship and Tennis Operations Committees.

Ann ClarkeAnne Clark, Chairman National Tennis Operations

Anne joined the LTA Council representing Sussex in 2003. She is Chair of the National Tennis Operations Advisory and Scrutiny Board having served on that board since 2005.

Anne works as the Head of Franchise and Access for London and South Eastern Railway Ltd and has experience in project and programme management, IT, business processes and change management in the Railway and Telecommunications industries.

She is Tennis Sussex Deputy Chair and Ladies’ Match Secretary as well as being Captain of the Sussex ladies’ 35s team and of various club teams at Purley LTC in Surrey.

Cathie SabinCathie Sabin, Council-Elected Member

Cathie joined the LTA Council representing Shropshire in 2001.  She has served on the Education & Young People Committee, the Affiliation Review Group and the National Tennis Operations Advisory & Scrutiny Board.

A retired schoolteacher, Cathie is a member of the British Schools’ Tennis Association Management Committee and Chairman of the DFS Classic pre-Wimbledon tournament (since 2006). She is a qualified referee and holds a number of positions within Shropshire including Child Protection Officer, Lead Volunteer and Chair of the Tournament Committee.

Peter WilkesPeter Wilkes, Chairman of Professional Tennis Advisory & Scrutiny Board

Peter is the director of a vending and contract cleaning company. He played county tennis for Yorkshire and has served on the LTA’s marketing and National Training committees.


Peter BrethertonPeter Bretherton, President’s Nomination

Peter was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1970 and was a main board director of a public company. He has served on various LTA committees and boards including National Facilities and Development (now Tennis Operations). He is a member of the Committee of Management of The Championships.

Andrew Crichton, Deputy Honorary TreasurerAndrew Crichton


Andrew joined the LTA Council representing the Channel Islands in 1993 and has served on the Investment and Funding Committees. A qualified accountant, he has gained wide experience in international business affairs and in financial and tax planning.  He is currently Chairman of the Caversham Group of Companies providing financial and fiduciary services in Jersey, Geneva and London.

Andrew was President of the CILTA from 1995 to 2004. He was appointed Deputy Honorary Treasurer of the LTA by the Council at its meeting in November 2007.

Roger Draper

Roger Draper, Chief Executive

Roger Draper is the CEO of the LTA. He’s one of the new breed of sports leaders who are combining their direct experience of competing as an elite athlete with first rate business administration skills. He is currently in the thick of leading the transformation of British tennis with a new world class tennis team, a clear strategy that has been widely acclaimed, and an organisation that’s been modernised to perform in the 21st century sports environment. His wide experience in the ‘business of sport’ has included time as CEO of Sport England, leading  a major review and reorganisation of the £500m spent on sport in this country, involvement in the 2012 bid and Team England’s 2006 Commonwealth Games campaign. As an elite athlete, Roger has gained nternational honours in both rugby league and tennis.

Kevan Taylor, Finance DirectorKevan Taylor, Finance Director

Kevan was appointed in March 2007 and he has now been involved as a board director in three sports – Tennis, Rugby Union and Football. Before becoming professionally involved in sport five years earlier, Kevan was a Finance Director at Granada plc (now known as ITV), with responsibility for the financial management of the largest commercial television production business in the United Kingdom.
