The LTA takes its responsibilities towards the welfare of young people in tennis very seriously and requires everyone in tennis who has significant contact with children, or access to their records, to have an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure.
The LTA uses the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure service to check the background and assess the suitability of anyone applying for a position of trust, including coaches, tennis assistants, referees, umpires, volunteers and anyone who has either direct contact with or responsibility for children or vulnerable people.
A Disclosure is a document containing details of a person’s criminal record drawn from national police records. It may also include details from lists held by government departments, plus checks against local police records.
If you have a query about the introduction of the Vetting and Barring Scheme, or of the Scottish Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme, visit our advice on Vetting and Barring in British Tennis.
The LTA complies fully with the CRB Code of Practice, Data Protection Act and other relevant legislation intended to ensure that information released will be used fairly, and also that sensitive personal information is handled and stored appropriately and is kept for only as long as necessary.
In line with Home Office guidelines the LTA does not practice portability of CRBs. This means we do not accept an applicant’s CRB certificate issued from another organisation, only those processed through the LTA for the LTA. This is because the LTA as a registered body may receive additional information that is not printed on the applicant’s copy.
The LTA is a Registered Body with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), which provides criminal records checks on behalf of the Home Office.
We have a dedicated CRB team at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton. The team will process CRB disclosure applications for those who are involved with training or providing services for children in Tennis (e.g. Tennis Coaches, Tennis Club Volunteers) or in a Multi- Racquet Sports environment (Physiotherapists, Managers).
To Apply
If you would like to apply for a CRB check for a club volunteer then please fill out and return the
Club Volunteer Form. If you have lived at more than two addresses in the last five years please also fill in the Additional Address Form
To apply for a CRB disclosure through the LTA you will need to:
- Get an LTA CRB disclosure application pack, including a CRB form with the LTA’s name and address printed on it (see below for more info)
- Complete the form and take it to a registered LTA ‘verifier’ who will check your identity against the information on the application form
- Pay the £36 fee (volunteers are exempt)
Your application will then be processed and once approved or ‘countersigned’, your form will be sent to the CRB itself for the check to be carried out. This can take up to 8 weeks although most are issued within a 4-6 week period.
Two copies of the disclosure are issued by the CRB Executive Agency – one is sent directly to you and the other one is sent directly to the CRB team at the LTA.
An LTA CRB disclosure application pack includes an application form as well as detailed instructions on how to make your application.
If you would like to get an LTA CRB disclosure application pack, you can:
- Collect a pack in person from an LTA County Office – County Contacts
- Email the CRB team at crb@LTA.org.uk with your full postal address
- Call the CRB team on 0208 487 7179/7190
